Muriel Arnold was brought up on a farm in Lincolnshire and attended Barrowby School and Grantham Technical College. Her linguistic career took her to many parts of the world before she joined the seagoing staff of Cunard. She served as assistant purser on board the Queen Mary and latterly as Social Secretary on the Queen Elizabeth 2.
