Paul Christofori is consumed by guilt at taking over the house, family and work of his old friend Anton. As he peers through Anton's telescope at earlier constellations of the universe, it dawns on him that focussing on the past is the only way of making sense of the present. In an attempt to exorcise his demons, Paul decides to recount the bizarre events which have brought him to this point.
John Cardinal's complex and thoroughly absorbing first novel is an alluminating and ultimately uplifting examination of love, life and the gravitational pull of the past.
"At long last I have read Axis and enjoyed it enormously. The progressive intertwining of 'fact' and fantasy is very skilfully done and I like the fugue-like effect created. It is most definitely my kind of novel..."
Stuart Andrews, formerly Head Master of Clifton College, Bristol
"It's a magnificient achievement...I like the sense of working through time...But for me the real joy of the novel is (its) use of language, expressive, beautifully modualted, poetic. Very fine."
Keith Entwistle, Teacher of Modern Languages, Author and Editor
"The chapters are short and never ponderous; the style pleasing, restrained in those descriptions that might otherwise seem risque, and often rich in its vocabulary, with from time to time beautiful metaphors"
Ms Sophie Lordon ( translated from her review in French - Impressions a la lecture d'AXIS de John Cardinal)
